Ubuntu One app for iOS now supports AirPlay streaming

The interface may still be a bit spartan, but the Ubuntu One app for iOS has added an important new feature in its latest update. If you're running iOS 4.2 you can now take advantage of AirPlay to pump tunes to compatible devices like an Apple TV box. At last you can blast your cloud-synced tunes out of the home theater system as you wander around the house, controlling playback from your pocketable touchscreen!

Canonical reminds users that the Ubuntu One app will stream all your music -- not just tracks purchased through their store. While the app is free, a $3.99 per month mobile subscription is required to use the app.

Pioneer teams with Microvision on laser heads-up display, next-gen pico projector tech

Remember when Pioneer's Android minions shot laser beams from their eyes and created an awesome prototype heads-up display? It turns out those lasers came from a Microbision PicoP projector, and that prototype is inching towards reality. You see, Pioneer's partnered with Microvision to build a brand-new laser module for the commercial version -- which is set to debut in 2012 -- using a brand-new display engine and the actual green laser that's been missing from the formula up until now. We can't wait to burn driving directions into our collective retina, so we'll be watching this one closely from now on. PR and video after the break.

'Tis the Season for Rolling Releases

Ah, the holiday season. Children may have visions of sugarplums dancing in their heads, but here in the Linux blogosphere, it's been something a bit different. Rolling releases, that is. Yes, there must be something about this time of year that has made tongues more likely to wag and Linux bloggers more likely to think about daily updates.

It's Not Your Grandpa's Planetarium Anymore

Nearly three thousand planetariums dot the U.S. terrestrial landscape, featuring celestial shows about stars, planets, solar systems and galaxies, often projected onto an overhead dome-shaped screen by a technology that hasn't changed much since it was introduced in 1923: the "star ball."

Ubuntu 11 alpha now available, features new Unity desktop, Firefox 4

Ubuntu 11.04, with Unity
The first alpha release of Ubuntu 11, dubbed Natty Narwhal, has just been released. It is classed as a "developer snapshot," and is provided more as a sneak preview of what's to come in Ubuntu 11. Regular users of Ubuntu 10 should not upgrade.

Along with the usual package updates and an updated kernel (2.6.37), Ubuntu 11 will also ship with Firefox 4. The alpha build includes Firefox 4 beta 7, and it will be upgraded with newer builds as they become available. The other big change is that the Unity desktop environment now enabled by default, replacing GNOME. You can still switch back to another desktop environment, if you don't like Unity (but looking at the screenshot above, how can you not like it?)

There are various changes and notes for the other Ubuntu releases -- Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Netbook Edition -- but mostly, this alpha is focused on the standard Desktop Edition of Ubuntu.

ASLR security coming to jailbroken iPhones with Antid0te

In an effort to make your iPhone more secure, security analyst and jailbreak developer Stefan Esser is releasing Antid0te on December 14th. LimeWire throws in the towel, shutters their Music Store

Napster, the venerable grandfather of music downloading apps, staged somewhat of an amazing comeback a few years ago -- becoming a fully legal music service. If you were expecting the same from LimeWire after the recent kick-in-the-groin bestowed upon it by the RIAA, your hopes may have been officially dashed.

LimeWire has sent out a PR missive stating that they have been forced to shut down the fully-legal LimeWire Store. Most people I know who used LimeWire had no idea you could actually buy music using the app, though they seemed universally convinced that paying for the pro version meant all their P2P downloads were perfectly legit.

The store will close down for good on December 31, 2010 and is no longer accepting new customers. If you've got credits to spend, hurry up and do it. After the 31st, they're gone for good... and the poor little store never even got to shed its beta tag.

BearExtender PC review

Signal. You can never get enough signal. Got full bars on your laptop? Something will come up, cause you to move, and then you'll be down to three, and then two, and before you know it your downloads will be failing and you'll be holding your device up and waving it around, hoping the fickle gods Micro and Wave will smile upon your plaintive dance while everyone else in the coffee shop sneers over mochas. You could avoid this scene with a BearExtender PC, a $45 device that will give you signal enough to curse them all and work out on the patio if you feel like it. Read on to see if it's worth it.
